This is treasure? [488] Words
[Poor Grallus, the Rogue – 5]
Appreciating the fact that the cave will be submerged into complete darkness within a few minutes, he quickly throws the backpack down on the soft compost pile.
“Let’s see what we have in here huh?” he says as the little cat jumps on the pile next to him.
Dumping out the backpack reveals a menagerie of different categorical contents. Rummaging through the contents, he starts ticking them off as he picks things out of the cargo pile.
“Okay, we have, uh, a ring of about sixty keys or so, and a little food. Oh, good,” he says as he puts a small apple in his mouth. The little cat brushes up against his arm and starts jumping up and down in place again. Speaking with his mouth full, “Oh is there somethin’ in here for you too? Okay lessee, hold-on. Well there are some inks, papers I’ll go through later, what looks like rolled up maps, uh oh ah here we go,” he says as he pulls out a small leather bag full of little strips of what from the smell seems to be spiced chicken. At the sight of this the little cat jumps up and down at a more rapid pace. “Okay, okay, hold on,” he says, giving three little strips to the cat, who happily devours them instantly.
Continuing to dig, “Ah-hah! That is what I was looking for.” With the newly discovered flint and tinder in his hand due to the almost complete lack of light he is forced to feel around on the ground for the discarded torch. “Got it!” he proudly exclaims as he immediately lights the torch instantly illuminating the cavern in bright flickering orange light.
He carefully leans the torch against the rock wall. “Okay what else,” he says as he pulls out a dark heavy woolen cloak that when worn would run from head to toe. “Well this looks both warm and, uh well, very shroud like,” he says with a little laugh. Looking down he realized that under the cloak was a few more food items and a very old battered looking spyglass. Picking it up gingerly he realizes that it isn’t as fragile as he originally thought but is however very beat up and worn. It is not extendable like some of the pirate ones he’s seen, “Wait, where I have ever seen pirate spyglasses?” he asks himself. Shaking the moment off he examines it closer realizing the wood is badly sun blistered, the metal fittings are dented, and even the glass on the end is cracked and scratched. Confused at any possible value, “Why would they want to kill me for this, and why would I take it in the first place?” Looking through the eyepiece he sees nothing but a dark blur. “Peeping at anything through this’ll give me a headache,” he says pulling it away from his eye.
“This stupid thing doesn’t even work…”
